Alberta Independence Support Holds at 30% as Referendum Battle Heats Up
New Angus Reid polling shows support for Alberta independence has held steady at 30% since May, with an October 19 referendum approaching.
A new Angus Reid Institute poll finds support for Alberta independence has held steady at 30% since May, as rival campaigns recruit volunteers and raise money ahead of an October 19 referendum on whether to pursue a future binding vote on independence. A related question found 33% of Albertans would vote to begin the process toward a future referendum, while 61% would vote to keep Alberta in Canada — suggesting some voters back holding another vote without being fully committed to leaving. Support is highest among older men: 45% of those aged 35–54 and 48% of those 55+ would vote to proceed, while younger Albertans lean strongly toward remaining in Canada. The October 19 vote also carries far more weight for independence supporters, 85% of whom call it "very important" to Alberta's future, compared to 60% of those who'd vote to stay.
