A Calgary judge has told Elections Alberta the court will not allow further delay in a complaint against Forever Canadian, the federalist third-party advertiser backing the "remain" side of Alberta's October 19 independence referendum. Rebel News, which brought the challenge, says Forever Canadian has run a tour bus, opened two offices, distributed thousands of lawn signs, and staged two benefit concerts — including one featuring Jann Arden — while reporting zero dollars in expenditures or donations to Elections Alberta.
Rebel News filed a 241-page complaint with Elections Alberta on July 24. After 48 days with no action, it sought judicial review. The judge has now set an expedited schedule, with Wednesday filing deadlines for Rebel News and Friday deadlines for Forever Canadian, whose side is represented by former Conservative MP Brent Rathgeber arguing against financial disclosure. The court's push for speed suggests it intends to resolve the matter before Albertans vote on October 19.
