Fact Check: Is Forever Canadian Dodging Third-Party Advertiser Disclosure Rules?

Elections Alberta says Thomas Lukaszuk's "Forever Canadian" group can avoid third-party advertiser disclosure rules simply by not using words like "vote" or "choose" in its messaging.

Alberta Fact Check reports that Thomas Lukaszuk's "Forever Canadian" group has avoided the disclosure and funding-cap rules that bind registered third-party advertisers (TPAs) during the referendum campaign. Elections Alberta says a group only counts as a TPA if it clearly promotes or opposes a side, so avoiding words like "vote," "choose," "Remain," or "Separate" appears to be enough to sidestep the requirements — even while spending heavily on referendum-related messaging.

Unlike registered TPAs, which must disclose donors, cap contributions, and limit total spending, a group that avoids TPA designation faces no such restrictions, meaning it could accept unlimited and undisclosed funding, including from outside Alberta.
