Let Alberta Decide co-leader Tanya Clemens argues Alberta's October 19 referendum is less about a final break from Canada than about handing Premier Danielle Smith leverage in her dealings with Ottawa. Smith has said she wants Alberta's relationship with the federal government to look more like Quebec's - and Clemens believes a strong result would give Smith exactly that kind of bargaining position, potentially opening Ottawa up to Senate reform and fairer treatment of Alberta within Confederation. She says she doesn't understand why Smith would campaign against a vote that could strengthen her own hand.
Responding to critics who call the independence push dangerous, Clemens points to Quebec's own history of leveraging self-determination for a stronger position in Confederation. "Is it dangerous to pursue more self-determination?" she asked. Her pitch to Albertans, including those who love Canada but want a better deal: October's vote isn't a yes to independence - it's a yes to leverage.
