Mitch Sylvestre Calls for Legislative Review of Elections Alberta's Signature Verification Process
Petition proponent Mitch Sylvestre is calling for a legislative review after Elections Alberta's sampling process rejected genuine signatures over minor discrepancies unrelated to authenticity.
Mitch Sylvestre, proponent of the citizen initiative petition organized with Stay Free Alberta and CEO of the Alberta Prosperity Project, is calling on the Alberta Legislature to review Elections Alberta's administration of the citizen initiative process. Although the petition surpassed the statutory threshold of 177,732 signatures, Elections Alberta's statistical sampling reduced its initial count of 279,337 valid signatures to an estimated 222,597 verified, with a scrutineer documenting electors rejected over minor discrepancies like forgotten signing dates or apartment numbers rather than any evidence of fraud.
Sylvestre is calling for clear regulations governing signature validation, a "totality of evidence" standard instead of exact correspondence in every field, improved public notice before phone verification begins, and greater transparency on how individual rejections are statistically multiplied into hundreds of excluded signatures.
