Referendum TPA Donation Roundup: CPC-Aligned Group Reports Zero in First Week

Albertans donated over $57,964 to third-party advertisers on either side of the independence referendum between September 4 and 10, according to reports published on the Elections Alberta website. As in recent weeks, most of the money split between the leading federalist group, Alberta's Voice, and the leading pro-independence group, Let Alberta Decide.

Alberta's Voice, led by political strategist Stephen Carter, topped the week with $26,089 in donations, bringing its total to $178,510 — second among all groups. Let Alberta Decide, co-led by Keith Wilson and Tanya Clemens, saw its multi-week run atop the leaderboard end after raising $17,270, though it still holds a commanding overall lead at over $502,258.

The headline of the week, however, was zero — the Conservative Party of Canada's TPA, "Stronger Alberta Within a United Canada," registered with Elections Alberta on September 2 and reported no donations in its first week. MP Dane Lloyd is leading that campaign. Some Albertans have been watching closely to see whether its funding would come from party donations or contributions from outside Alberta. Thomas Lukaszuk's "Forever Canadian" also filed another weekly report showing zero donations, as it has throughout the campaign, despite running lawn signs and a cross-province tour; Lukaszuk maintains the group is campaigning on "Canadian unity" rather than the referendum question itself.

Despite Alberta's Voice topping the individual weekly leaderboard, federalist groups lost the combined weekly totals overall, raising $28,274 compared to $29,690 for nationalist TPAs. With about five weeks left before the October 19 referendum, Albertans have now donated more than $1.2 million to TPAs since the question was announced — $925,265 to pro-independence groups and $317,076 to federalists.
