Smith Walks Back Spring 2027 Timeline for a Binding Independence Referendum
Premier Danielle Smith now says she'll "have to see legally how quickly" a binding independence referendum could be held, stepping back from earlier town-hall remarks pointing to March or April 2027.
After suggesting at UCP town halls that a binding Alberta independence referendum could be held as soon as March or April 2027 — if Albertans vote Option 2 on the October 19 referendum — Premier Danielle Smith said Wednesday she would "have to see legally how quickly" her government could move. She cited legislation she says bars a referendum within a year of a general election; Alberta's next election is scheduled for October 2027.
Smith did not specify which law she meant. Alberta's Citizen Initiative Act restricts citizen-initiated referendum petitions in the year before a scheduled election, but does not prevent the government itself from ordering a referendum in an election year.
